TWENTY-SEVEN

The smell of smoke and oil filled Ena’s nostrils as she once again entered Glasgow’s Central Railway Station. She wrinkled her nose. ‘Scotland’s mainland is a bit different to Mainland Shetland.’

Fraser chuckled. ‘It is that.’

She stopped to check the timetable. ‘The train leaves in five minutes,’ she said over her shoulder. When there was no reply she turned round. Fraser had gone. She circled a group of school children listening to their teacher give a potted history of steam trains. ‘Fraser?’ she shouted. Ena could see the big man exiting the station cafeteria. ‘Fraser,’ she shouted, running towards him, ‘I thought you’d left without saying goodbye.’

He held up a white paper bag. ‘I’ve got you a couple of sandwiches for the journey and a bottle of lemonade.’ He looked up at the station clock. ‘You’ll need to put a spurt on if you’re to catch the train. Platform five,’ he said, leading the way. ‘Come on or you’ll miss it.’

The ticket collector was closing the train’s doors as Ena and Fraser ran down the ramp and onto the platform. Fraser opened the first door they came to, took her overnight bag from her and threw it in. Ena leapt in after it. He passed the sandwiches and the lemonade to her and when the platform attendant blew his whistle, pushed on the door until it was securely closed.

Ena pulled down the window. ‘I should like to tell Highsmith that Archie Hollander saved his life in Berlin. You see, he blames himself for Crosier’s death. Highsmith believes Crosier was killed to stop them from meeting up. I think Rupert deserves to know the truth?’ Fraser made no comment. ‘He has been carrying the guilt of Crosier’s death around with him for twenty-four years. If I tell him the truth, it won’t go any further.’ Fraser’s brow furrowed. ‘I also feel he should know that because of him, those who would have brought the government down and seen Hitler in power were stopped.’

Fraser nodded. ‘And Crosier’s widow?’

‘I won’t tell her. I may not tell her anything at all. We still don’t know who’s sending Highsmith anonymous letters. Until I can rule her out, she’s a suspect,’ Ena said. ‘If she’s innocent I’ll say that there was an altercation between her husband and another man resulting in her husband being killed. I won’t tell her the real reason he was in Berlin. There’s no point in taking away the love she had, and still has for him. I’ll tell her that the man who killed her husband is dead. I won’t tell her about you or Father O’Broin.’

Fraser smiled. It suited him, Ena thought. ‘I’m sorry Archie Hollander is dead. I think I would have liked him.’

‘You? Like a man who killed in cold blood?’

Ena laughed. ‘You shouldn’t believe everything Colonel Smith tells you. But yes,’ Ena said, ‘by killing one man, a traitor, Archie Hollander saved the lives of thousands of men and women. If it hadn’t been for him and Highsmith,
